In the words of bell hooks, "One of the things that we must do as teachers is twirl around and around, and find out what works with the situation that we're in.” A handful of us got together and decided that this situation calls for nurture, inspiration and restoration.  So our first offering is an opportunity for those of us who are writing right now and those who are not to tap in - to ourselves and each other - and connect with whatever we need most.

We’d love to see you at The Grove.

"Goddard definitely played a huge role in my progression. The educational model allowed me to hone my craft, study, and find my voice as a poet and a writer. I spent a lot of early mornings in the music building and a lot of late nights in
the recording studio. Now, all of that work has created for me a very unique career. Outside of writing, recording, and performing, I teach high school literature at Chesapeake Bay Academy and English Composition at Norfolk State University."

Synnika recently constructed a short film called "Poetry as Resistance and Identity" for a program called Black Stories Matter at the Muse Writing Center in Norfolk VA, which offers creative writing opportunities and programs to aspiring writers in the community. His writing continues to confront institutionalized racism and police violence.

Synnika Alekzander-Chizoba Lofton is a poet, recording artist, educator, and a founding member of the hip hop group Black Lion Insurgents. He received a BA and an MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College.
