The Clockhouse Writers’ Conference & Retreat is just four weeks away! I’ll share the full schedule once it’s completed but, for today, I thought I’d give more information about the Visiting Professional and Visiting Writer sessions we’ll attend alongside the MFAW Program.
This year’s Visiting Professional is Kirby Kim of the Janklow & Nesbit Literary Agency. Here’s a description of the session he’ll offer on Monday afternoon, June 27:
GETTING TO YES (Kirby Kim)
Literary agent Kirby Kim will talk about ways writers can get through that first door: representation. Mr. Kim will talk about how to make yourself a more attractive client apart from what’s between the covers of your book. He will discuss what you can do to alleviate some of an agent’s more mundane concerns. How to build an author platform particularly as a writer of fiction. Mr. Kim will talk about the ultimate yes which is the one from the publisher.
This year’s Visiting Writer is the award-winning screenwriter Jeremy Pikser, who is perhaps best known for the film Bulworth. Here’s a description of the workshop he’ll be offering on Tuesday morning, June 28:
ACHIEVING THEMATIC COHERENCE (Jeremy Pikser)
Achieving thematic coherence in screenplays through structuring dramatic actions.
In this workshop we will be investigating what films “mean” and how that meaning is achieved through structuring resolutions of dramatic tension. We will screen pivotal scenes from several films and discuss how they affect the development of the overall story and it’s ultimate meaning.
The 2016 Clockhouse Writers’ Conference & Retreat will take place from June 27 through July 1 on Goddard College’s Plainfield, Vermont, campus. There are still a few places left, so if you’re an alum of Goddard’s MFAW program–from either Plainfield or Port Townsend–please consider joining us! Registration forms are available here.
