Know Thy Characters – From the Inside-Out

Analyzing Characters’ Personalities, Actions, and Reactions

An MFA-level writing workshop from Goddard College

With author & Goddard faculty member Aimee Liu

Join author and Goddard College MFA faculty member Aimee Liu for a sample of the Goddard MFA experience for writers of fiction or creative nonfiction, and learn how to develop authentic characters using the basics of personality structure.

Whether you’re writing fiction, narrative nonfiction, or plays for stage or screen, the degree to which you know your characters can make or break your story.  It’s not enough just to be able to visualize them or list the major events of their lives.  You really need to psychoanalyze them. What motivates them? What differentiates them?  What stops them in their tracks?  In this workshop we will apply the basics of personality structure to character development on the page.  We’ll examine the crucial dramatic links between human temperament, decision-making, and action.
